It will be well over a year before Guyana can have a General and Regional Elections, a direct consequence of the No-Confidence Motion was passed on December 21, 2018. In the eyes of President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Nicholas Deygoo-Boyer, this is a most disappointing state of affairs, especially when the Constitution stipulates that such an election should have occurred within three months of the said motion being passed.

For this businessman, it is not acceptable that this Constitutional requirement was not fulfilled because of the unpreparedness of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). In fact, Deygoo-Boyer said that Guyanese deserve way better.

His displeasure and call for betterment was related at GCCI’s 130th Annual Awards and Gala Dinner which took place at the Marriott Hotel on Thursday last. There, Deygoo-Boyer detailed all that took place following the successful passage of the Opposition’s motion, from the Government’s challenge of its validity in the local courts to the final ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

After recalling those details, the businessman alluded to the fact that the Commission’s ineptitude cannot be overlooked.

He added, “…As leaders in the business world, if any unit we ran failed its mandate, there would have been serious repercussions and investigations launched into why there was a breakdown in the unit not being able to deliver upon its mandated function within the prescribed time…”

As if the trials and tribulations that surrounded the validity of the motion were not enough, the GCCI President then bemoaned the challenges being experienced with GECOM’s efforts to put a credible list of voters in place. He said that this saga clearly exposes how flawed the current composition of the Commission is and therefore stressed that Guyanese need a better way forward.

Deygoo-Boyer insisted in no uncertain terms that citizens must not be held hostage to the battle for power.
