A 78-year-old woman is now dead after being struck down on Burnham Drive, Wismar, Linden around 07:30 hrs yesterday by a drunk driver.
The deceased has been identified as Juliet Cornelius of Lot 55 West Watooka, Linden. The elderly woman, who was heading to church when she was struck down, was pronounced dead at the Linden Hospital Complex.
The driver has since been arrested. A breathalyser test showed that he was over the prescribed limit of alcohol.
The Guyana Police Force said that the car was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road—reportedly at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn.
As a result of this, he ended up hitting the elderly woman, who was walking on the southern parapet.
The woman was flung some distance from the point of impact and died shortly after.
