Divisional Commander, Simon McBean has confirmed that one bandit has been killed, another shot and two captured after they attempted to rob a Chinese restaurant at Tuschen Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD) shortly after 21:00 hrs tonight.
The deceased’s name has not been released as yet. He was shot at the scene by the owner of the property.
According to information received, the men entered the Chinese restaurant and demanded that the customers and Chinese couple, who operate the food establishment, remain quiet and hand over all their cash.
After collecting the cash from the restaurant, the men took the couple to their living quarters and demanded more cash and valuables. At this point, the owner of the building—a licenced firearm holder—heard the commotion and went out to investigate.
Guyana Standard has been informed that as the man was about to enter the restaurant, he saw the bandits and opened fire, shooting one of the suspects who had remained in the restaurant with the customers.
He then opened fire on the other bandits. It is unclear if the men traded bullets with him. Reports are that the suspects managed to escape in a waiting car but were intercepted at Den Amstel during a police roadblock.
One of the men had to be taken to the Leonora Cottage hospital for treatment while two were taken into custody.
