An early morning boat accident in the Pomeroon River has resulted in the death of a 25-year-old miner. A second person has been hospitalized after the boat they were travelling in collided with a tree.
The accident occurred sometime between 12:30hrs and 01:00hrs this morning.
The deceased has been identified as Renny France of Grant Friendship Canal, Lower Pomeroon River. He died on arrival at the Oscar Joseph District Hospital. Dennon Lyte, 27, is hospitalized at the same hospital after suffering injuries.
According to information received, the two men were heading home in a wooden boat which was being steered by Lyte. As they turned into the Friendship Canal, they collided with a tree and fell into the water.
The men were rescued by persons around and were immediately taken to the hospital where France succumbed.
Police ranks who visited the scene said that the accident might have happened as a result of poor lighting. It is suspected that the men were using light on their phones to guide them through the river.
It is unclear if the victims were intoxicated at the time of the accident. Investigation continues.
