The Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) and authorities of Region Seven are working feverishly to have, for the first time, decentralized services available to residents of the Town of Bartica and its environs.
The new partnership with its self -empowerment concept, is expected to see a number of young people and adults signing up for Carnegie training programmes before the end of January.
During the International Decade for People of African Descent’s (IDPADA-G) Family Welfare and Business Conference at Bartica on November 29, 2019, the immediate need, amongst youth, was for continuing education opportunities. Recently re-elected Mayor Gifford Marshall along with Councillor Kenneth Williams had indicated their interest in various areas of service that were believed to be relevant to the region. They told IDPADA-G that since Bartica is emerging as an ideal tourism destination, much training is needed. As such, residents should be able to access training programmes which include hospitality, cosmetology, interior decorating, commercial food preparation and garment construction.
IDPADA-G brought Carnegie on board for discussions with the Bartica Council and meetings were held with the Board Chairperson for Bartica and Three Miles Secondary Schools as locations to accommodate the long-term special training. Subsequent site visits by the various teams were also made to the schools.
Hundreds of Barticians had attended IDPADA-G’s Mega Conference where numerous government agencies were available to offer services. Residents were able to sign up with IDPADA-G’s credit union, apply for their passports and birth certificates, register their businesses, seek business advice and information, access free medical care and other services. The Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, University of Guyana also participated and is actively considering offering programmes in Bartica.
IDPADA-G has been engaging the African Guyanese community countrywide in their execution of the United Nations declaration of the International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024.
The Assembly, with support and funding from government has been able to offer much assistance to the African Guyanese community.
