The man behind the birth of the Caribbean Region’s premier junior boxing tournament (Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Tournament), Steve Ninvalle, has revealed that Guyana will be hosting the CARIFTA Boxing Championship in April of this year.

Ninvalle who is the president of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), noted that Guyana’s hosting of the tournament will see the return of boxing amongst Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) countries, for the first time since 1998 when it was hosted in the Bahamas.

The countries on board at this point are the Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Dominica who have confirmed their participation.

In a correspondence to the media, Ninvalle intimated that Guyana’s hosting of the championship reflects the GBA’s “unrelenting drive to ensure our Youth, Junior and Schoolboy categories are provided with all the resources necessary to bring them on par with Latin America, Europe and the wider world.”

He further pointed out; “It wouldn’t be an easy task but I have a committed executive, Coaches Commission and Referees and Judges Commission. Combined with other external support; I have no doubt that this tournament will be a success”.
