Six months after a businessman suffered a broken jaw and left hand as a result of a beating he received in the Ruimveldt Police Station, a police constable who was seen in the widely circulated video on social media carrying out the attack, was moments ago charged for the offence.
Twenty-seven-year-old Jamal Watson, a serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on July 19, 2019, at Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Jermaine Wilson so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
An unrepresented Watson appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
Watson told the court that he has been a member of the Force for four years and is currently stationed at the Tactical Service Unit (TSU).
Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss made no objections to bail being granted to the officer. Hence, the Magistrate released him on $100,000 bail.
Condition of the bail is that he stay 200 feet away from the victim, his residence and his place of employment.
He was also instructed to not make contact or cause anyone to make contact with the victim.
The Magistrate also placed him on a bond to keep the peace until the hearing and determination of the trial or in default two weeks behind bars.
The matter was adjourned until January 27 when he will appear before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly for statements.
According to information,Forty-year-old Jermaine Wilson of Lot 50, West Front Road, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who said he trades in vehicle spare parts, reportedly suffered a broken jaw and left hand as a result of the incident.
It was reported that on the day in question, Wilson visited the outpost in the company of his spouse to check on her brother who was being held at the facility.
However, on his arrival at the Station, Watson accused him of selling drugs.
An argument then ensued between the two and Watson allegedly ordered another rank to restrain Wilson.
The victim was then handcuffed at the station and it was then that Watson dealt him several punches to his face.
He was then kicked about his body as he fell on the floor, and had his Rastafarian locks pulled at viciously by Watson.
It is alleged that Watson then dealt him several blows about his body with a wooden club, resulting in him sustaining a broken jaw and left arm.
He was then placed in the lockups with his injuries and was left there for seventy-two hours, before receiving medical attention.
