A fire, believed to be electrical in origin, destroyed the District Ultra Lounge which is located inside the Strip at the Giftland Mall, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara (ECD) earlier today.
Owner of the night club, Sean Major, estimated his losses to be in excess of $45 million. He said that he was at home when he received a call about the fire some time around 01:23 hrs.
Guyana Standard has been informed that the club was closed at the time of the fire. It was staffers from the other businesses inside of the strip who observed smoke emanating from the popular hang out spot and raised an alarm.
Proprietor of the mall, Roy Beepat said that with proactive action from supreme ventures and the Giftland team, the fire was put out within seven minutes. However, due to the combustion, the smoke that had accumulated took almost one hour to disperse from the strip.
Beepat said that the situation was under control by the time fire fighters arrived. They however, did play a part in ensuring all trapped smoke was extracted from the ceiling and roof of the mall.
The mall owner thanked his staff and everyone who played a part in putting out the blaze
