Weeks after being released on bail on a ganja trafficking charge, a 55-year-old security guard, was today back before a City Magistrate to answer to a similar charge.
Marlon Norton, of Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge stated that on January 27, 2020 at 59 William Street, Kitty, Georgetown, he had in his possession eight ecstasy pills, a type of amphetamine drug, equivalent to six grams.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession 289 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Norton pleaded not guilty to both charges after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
According to information, on the day in question, ranks on patrol duty conducted a search at the defendant’s home and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics were found.
The ecstasy pills were allegedly found in a bag.
The defendant was then told of the offence to which he denied. Hence, the present charge.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh objected to bail being granted to Norton due to the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. The Prosecutor also highlighted the fact that the defendant was previously charged for a similar offence and it was while on bail he committed this new offence.
The Magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s objections and remanded Norton to prison until February 3, 2020.
On December 18, last, Norton was charged for having 102 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking in his possession. He is currently on $150,000 bail for that offence.
