Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo has reiterated his party’s position that should it secure a win at the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections, there will be no witch-hunting or other acts of triumphalism.
“Most people believe that the PPP will win the elections, and they’re worried about triumphalism and witch-hunting and all of that [but] let me assure all Guyanese – including those that [sic] are worried about these issues – there’ll be no acts of triumphalism…We have no interest in the Victor/Loser Syndrome, or people just engaged in acts of retribution and triumphalism. All we want to do is start fixing things,” he said at his Church Street office this afternoon.
Jagdeo said that there are persons, who believe that should the party win, they will be discriminated against.
“People fear that because they were appointed by APNU (one-half of the governing coalition) or because of their race, or because of their politics, that there will be a witch-hunt, or they will be discriminated against. Those are the people who I’m speaking to…Because there are many, who are just hustling to get a job to feed their families, and that’s our job too,” he noted.
Jagdeo, however, said that the “few who are doing the wickedness” will have to “worry a lot” should the PPP/C win the elections.
Following the May 11, 2015, elections, which the Coalition won, the PPP/C claimed that there was a massive witch-hunt taking place within the public sector. The government, however, denied this, saying that it was only ridding corruption from the sector. The forensic audits that were conducted in the operations of several governmental agencies highlighted many instances of suspected malfeasance, and other acts of corruption by senior officials of these departments/agencies.
While only a few of these officials were charged, there was no successful conviction.
