A miner who pleaded guilty to stabbing a man twice with an ice-pick, was today charged and remanded to prison for the offence.
Twenty-three-year-old Shadrack King called Mark King of 522 Grove, East Bank Demarara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that on December 7, 2019 at Mousie Landing, Essequibo Magisterial District, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Steve Morrison with intent to maim, disfigured, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.

King, in his explanation to the court stated,” He saw me talking to a girl and he come with a cutlass and chop me so I had to defend myself. Is two fine bore I gave him with the ice-pick because my ice-pick really long so I didn’t wanna cause serious injuries.”
King added,” Is a big fat man and he skin stiff so he ain’t had to stay in hospital.”

However, facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question at around 22:00 hrs the men were at a shop drinking when they had an argument over a woman and Morrison armed himself with a cutlass and raised it at the defendant. The court heard the defendant then pulled out an ice-pick from his waist and dealt the victim several stabs about his body. He then made good his escape.

The injured man was then rushed to the Mahdia hospital where he was admitted for his injuries. The Prosecutor went on to tell the court that it was only yesterday that police were able to arrest King and charge him for the offence.

The Magistrate, after listening to the defendant, entered a not guilty plead on the his behalf.

The Prosecutor, upon hearing the Magistrate’s decision, objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the change attracts.
The Prosecutor also informed the court that the defendant was sentenced to 12 months in abstentia in 2018 for robbery underarms.

The Magistrate then asked the defendant why he was not attending court and he stated,” I won’t lie. Me and my four friends get charged and we been going to court. After a while I heard my friends them get jail so I go in the bush. Me ain’t gone lie to yuh.”
Hence, the Magistrate ordered him to start serving the 12 month sentence from today.

He was also instructed to make his next court appearance on February 7, 2020 for the wounding charge.
