A mason who pleaded not guilty to trafficking a quantity of marijuana, was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the offence.
Thirty-year-old Terry Gittens of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on February 15,2020, at Fourth Avenue Bartica, Essequibo Magisterial District, he had in his possession 1314 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by the court Prosecutor stated that on the day in question, at around 02:10hrs, ranks acting on information went to the Paradise Night Club at Third Avenue Bartica where they made contact with Gittens.
The court heard that the ranks told Gittens he was being arrested for a warrant which was out for him since last year and for him to serve four years behind bars for trafficking narcotics. This is after a Magistrate found him guilty of the offence.
It was heard that Gittens allegedly told the ranks that he would give them three pounds of marijuana for his freedom.
He then took the officers to a house and pulled out a black bulky bag containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics and handed over same to the ranks. He was then told of the offence and taken into custody.
The Prosecutor then informed the court that the defendant was sentenced to four years in abstentia in 2019 for trafficking narcotics.
The Magistrate subsequently ordered him to start serving the sentence immediately.
He was also instructed to make his next court appearance on March 12 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
