Days after Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks intercepted two men and seized over sixty pounds of cocaine and a “go fast boat”, the men were this morning remanded to prison for drug trafficking.
The men, 35-year-old Latchman Sankar and 47-year-old Muneshwar Dusrajh, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Wales Magistrates’ Courts.
The men pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on February 22,2020, at Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, they had in their possession 27.866 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
They were both represented by attorney-at-law Siand Dhurjon, who in an unsuccessful bail application told the court that his clients have no knowledge of the narcotics.
However, CANU Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford made serious objections to bail being granted to the defendants on the grounds of the quantity of the drugs and the penalty the offence attracts.
The prosecutor further indicated to the court that the prosecution intends to present substantial evidence against the defendants. The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded both men to prison.
They were instructed to make their next court appearance on March 13, 2020.
