The siblings of renowned engineer, Melvyn Sankies have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against, Medical Arts and Dr. Sheik Amir, a doctor attached to the hospital.

Together, Godffrey and Jean Sankie are claiming that the hospital and its surgeon are responsible for the death of their brother, who died on August 25, 2011. He was 73.

Melvyn succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital hours after being transferred there from Medical Arts where underwent an operation for hernia.

The dead man’s siblings believe that their brother’s untimely death was as a result of negligence on part of the hospital and its surgeon. In fact, they are convinced that their brother was given improper treatment during and after his surgery.

An autopsy would later reveal that the elderly man died of hypovolaemic shock which occurs when the volume of the circulatory system is too depleted to allow adequate circulation to the tissues of the body.

The engineer’s siblings contend that this occured right after Dr. Amir had performed surgery for hernia on August 25, 2011.

About two hours after the operation, he began vomiting and was transferred to the public hospital where he died a few hours later.

This lawsuit comes up for another hearing on March 06, 2020 before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the High Court in Demerara.

Senior Counsel Ralph Ramkarran is appearing for the hospital, while Senior Counsel Stephen Fraser is representing the siblings, who were appointed administrators of their brother’s estate.
