The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that one of its Police Sergeants has been placed under close arrest following the fatal shooting of Mahdia, Region Eight bus driver, Cleavon Gomes last night.
According to the police, the Sergeant opened fire on a miner, who was brandishing a cutlass at Gomes but instead, the bullet struck the 36-year-old in the left shoulder. He died shortly after at the Mahdia Hospital.
In a release, the police said that the deceased had an altercation with a 25-year-old miner at the Number 72 bus park and during the process, the miner reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and was brandishing it in a menacing manner at the victim.
The miner was allegedly warned repeatedly by a Police Sergeant, who was armed with a service pistol to desist but he ignored the rank and continued to confront the deceased.
According to the police release, at this point, the rank reportedly discharged a round in the miner’s direction but the victim ended up getting struck by the bullet. The miner has since been taken into custody.
This news agency has been informed that the miner and the deceased were involved in an argument over a female when the miner left and returned with a cutlass to confront Gomes.
It was during this confrontation that the victim was shot.
