A young woman who was travelling in a route 42 minibus was robbed of her cellphone, handbag and other belongings by three young men, who were also passengers in the same bus. The incident occurred at around 18:30hrs at McDoom on the East Bank of Demerara.

The young woman boarded the bus at the park on Lombard Street, and was seated in the second to last seat. As the bus was traversing the East Bank corridor, it made several stops to put off passengers.

Guyana Standard understands that a male then indicated that his destination was Middle Street, McDoom. When the bus stopped there, two young men existed. However, the third one, snatched the woman’s bag and cell phone.

As he attempted to exist the bus, its driver refused to stop. As a result, passengers and the conductor began shouting at him. The young man jumped from the speeding bus and ran through Middle Street, Mc Doom.

It was then the driver explained why he refused to stop the bus. According to the driver, “I see this boy from me mirror. He snatch the woman things and the other one was coming around by my side. Y’all [the passengers] need to be more vigilant.

The terrified young woman began crying and said she was afraid to raise an alarm as she suspected the thief was armed. The bus driver drove to the Agricola Police Outpost and advised the young woman to make a report.

At the time of the incident, there were about six other passengers in the bus. Guyana Standard was able to confirm that a report was made. Investigations are ongoing.
