Guyana has recorded its first confirmed Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) case, health officials have confirmed.

This confirmation comes hours after the National Reference Laboratory carried out a series of tests on samples taken from a 52-year-old woman, who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GHPC), this morning after being admitted for diabetes and hypertension-related complications.

Those results have indicated that, indeed, the woman was infected with COVID-19. At the time of the briefing this morning, health officials could not say definitively whether the woman was infected, and relied heavily on the results, which took eight hours to generate.

The Health Ministry is yet to make a public announcement on the matter. The Guyana Standard was informed that officials are currently in a meeting.

According to Director of Medical and Professional Services at the GPHC, Dr Fawcett Jeffrey, the woman recently arrived from Queens, New York.
