The Guyana Prison Service last evening announced that it will be reducing the number of visits allowed to inmates as it moves to protect its vulnerable prison environment against the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Starting from today and until further notice, remand and apellant prisoners who are normally given two visits per week will
now have one visit per fortnight.

Already the judiciary has announced that further remand for prisoners will be done via Skype.

The Prison Service said that convicted prisoners will continue to have one visit per month of ten minutes duration.

It also said that persons desirous of lodging money for prisoners’ Tuc Shop will be able to
do so at areas set up outside of the various prisons, Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 12 noon.

Items for the Mazaruni Prison can be delivered as usual to Prison Headquarters, Brickdam, Georgetown.

These arrangements will remain in force until we are informed that the Coronavirus situation is no longer a risk.

The Prison Service is urging all to take the necessary precautions and follow the advice of the health authorities.

Guyana has five prisons, one each in Camp Street, Georgetown; Mazaruni; New Amsterdam; Lusignan and Timehri.

Together, these prisons house just over 2000 inmates.
