Member of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) – one half of ruling coalition – Justice for All Party (JFAP), has called on the President, David Granger, to “do the right thing and allow the recounting process to be immediately completed to honour the will of the people of Guyana”.
The party, through it’s Leader, Chandranarine Sharma, and General Secretary, Savitree Singh Sharma wrote: ” We believe in the will of the people -irrespective of which party wins. We believe that the recounting process should be permitted and ALL ballots should be immediately recounted in an expeditious and transparent manner. Any party that wins through a transparent process will have our support.”
The national recount, which was agreed upon by Granger and the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, has been stalled following the granting of an injunction that was applied for by a candidate of the APNU+AFC.
A high-level team, which was fielded by the Caribbean Community to overlook the recount, withdrew after the injunction was granted.
This recount was seen as crucial to ensuring an official declaration of results for the General and Regional Elections that were held 17 days ago.
Since then, the country has already seen multiple delays to the tabulation process; illegal declarations; heavy police presence; protest actions; threatening of international observers; destruction of property and the harming of schoolchildren.
