Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo says that if David Granger, the incumbent president, is sworn in using unverified voter data, the party will up its call not only for international sanctions, but the stoppage of funds from institutions such as the Word Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Inter-American Bank (IDB).
He made these comments and more, during a press conference today.
The former Head of State said: “We will call for a stoppage of all the funds flowing from the multilateral institutions. Already, there is a bilateral curtailment of funds…We’re going to ask the World Bank, IMF and the IDB to shut down all disbursements to Guyana,” he said.
Apart from that, Jagdeo said that countries will also likely impose sanctions on Guyana, which will create a lot of hardships for citizens. Already, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has that individuals who seek to benefit from electoral fraud and form illegitimate governments/regimes will be subject to a variety of serious consequences from the United States.
Jagdeo said, today, that Pompeo’s message could not have been any clearer.
“ I don’t think you want any more an unambiguous statement from one of the highest levels in the US government…So, we are going to pursue the sanctions against individuals,” he reiterated.
