The 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly set on fire and left to die by her older boyfriend on Sunday last, continues to battle for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Burns Care Unit.
The 15-year-old sustained third degree burns to more than 70 percent of her body. She underwent her first surgery last Tuesday at the hospital.
The teen alleged that her 27-year-old boyfriend poured kerosene on her and then set her on fire at his employment site in Madewini, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, where he worked as a security guard.
The boyfriend however told the police that he and the teen were involved in an argument during which she burnt herself.
Earlier today, the teen’s mother, said that she does not believe her daughter would ever harm herself and claimed that the teen continues to maintain that it was the boyfriend who set her on fire over allegations that she had been unfaithful.
“My daughter is pretty and she is obsessed with herself so there is nowhere she will burn herself,” the woman said.
She explained that she was at home when her daughter told her that she was going to see the suspect. At 22:45 hrs that night, she returned with the young man while clad in burnt and torn clothes. She was covered in flour.
The boyfriend told the mother that her daughter went to his workplace and attempted suicide. However, it was when the teen was rushed to the hospital that she revealed the young man burnt her and left her to die.
It was actually his coworker who found her and called out for the suspect, forcing him to take her for medical attention—instead, he took her home.
Her mother rushed her to the hospital. The boyfriend has since been arrested.
