A security guard whom the court heard shot a miner after he was attacked him with two broken bottles, was today charged with manslaughter.

Thirty-four-year-old Devon Harris known as ‘Tallman’ , of Public Road Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on March 4,2020 at Blackwater Landing, Kanawaruk, Essequibo Magisterial District, he unlawfully killed Akeem Caesar.

Harris appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He was represented by Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail. Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Matthews stated that on the day in question, Caesar was at a shop imbibing with friends around 15:30 hrs when an argument ensued between him and Harris. The court heard that the men got into a physical confrontation and persons around parted them. However, Caesar left and returned shortly after with two broken bottles and began to attack Harris. The accused then pulled out a fireman and shot the victim once in the left foot. The victim was then taken to the Mahdia District Hospital around 23:30 hrs where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The matter was reported and following investigation, Harris was arrested and charged for the offence. While the prosecutor did not object to bail being granted to the accused, he asked that condition be applied. The Magistrate then granted Harris $200,000 bail. Condition of the bail is that he report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Friday until the hearing and completion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI). The father of four was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 9.
