Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Saturday last, about 20:00h at the intersection of Brickdam and Chalmers Place, Georgetown involving motor Vehicle PXX 3934, driven by a 38- year-old resident of South Vryheid’s Lust , East Coast Demerara (ECD) and 61-year-old pedal cyclist Vibert Tyrell, of Lot 381 Apple Drive, North East La Penitence, Georgetown.
Enquiries disclosed that the vehicle was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of Brickdam Public Road while the pedal cyclist was proceeding south along Chalmers Place. It was reported that on the approach of the intersection, the pedal cyclist reportedly rode from north to south into the path of the vehicle and a collision occurred.
As a result of the impact, the cyclist sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem examination was today conducted and the cause of his death was given as multiple injuries.
The driver who fled the scene, turned himself in at the Alberttown Police Station yesterday in the company of his attorney. He is in custody assisting with the investigation.
