A construction worker who is accused of attempting to kill his stepfather was today charged and remanded for the offence.
Twenty-six-year-old Darren Simpson of Lot 8 Plum Park, Sophia, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on March 24,2020, at Plum Park, Sophia, he caused grievous bodily harm to Morris Hinds with intent to murder him.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Matthews, stated that on the day in question, around 08:00hrs, Simpson threatened to kill Hinds when he was leaving for work. Hinds returned home sometime around 21:15hrs and as he exited his car, the accused approached him from behind and dealt him a lash to his head and hands with a piece of wood.
The injured man was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was admitted in a critical condition.

The matter was then reported and following an investigation, Simpson was arrested and charged for the offence.

The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegation and the fact that the victim is still hospitalized in a serious condition.

Simpson’s sister who was present in court informed the magistrate that her brother suffers from substance abuse and would usually smoke which would lead to him behaving in a violent manner. Upon hearing this, the defendant became annoyed and chased his sister out of the court.

The Magistrate, after listening to both sides, remanded Simpson to prison until March 7 for a psychiatric evaluation to be conducted.
