Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), met this morning to discuss the way forward following the ruling of the Full Court; which maintained that it has no jurisdiction to block a national recount of votes cast in the March 2 Regional and General Elections. The request for the action was brought by a candidate of the governing coalition, Ulita Moore, even after the leader of the party she represents, agreed to the recount which the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) had agreed to play a supervisory role.
The matter has been appealed by Moore, and is currently before the Court of Appeal.

Speaking to the media, moments ago, opposition-nominated Commissioner Sase Gunraj, said that his fellow opposition-nominated Commissioner, Robeson Benn, made a proposal this morning, in the form of a motion, in relation to the way forward.

“… [The proposal] is not very elaborate, except that it narrates the series of events that have brought us to this position, but basically, it proposes that we move ahead with the recount,” he said.

Gunraj informed that the Commission will meet again at 15:00hrs today to “further discuss” the motion.

The lawyer said that while some persons have taken a position that the commission should await the ruling of the Appeal Court before it (GECOM) makes another move, he does not agree with this.

“I disagree with that position because the court has explicitly, in its decision said to us: we have no jurisdiction in your affairs, you go there and you work it out. I believe, in here we have to come and we have to work it out,” he said.

Today marks exactly one month since votes were cast.
