A 25-year-old labourer who was shot by a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was today slapped with three charges and remanded to prison.
Shermar Bobb of Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge stated that on March 27,2020 at East LaPenitence, Georgetown, he discharged a firearm at Trenton Webb with intent to maim, disfigured or cause grievous bodily harm.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession a firearm when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.
The last charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession 14 live rounds of ammunition when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.
Bobb pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him.
His lawyer, George Thomas in a failed application to secure bail for his client, told the court that police mistook Bobb for one Osafo Johnson and shot him.
The lawyer added that his client, on the day in question, was with some family members when ranks showed up and began shooting in the air. A rank then shot his client to the leg and it was only when he was taken to the hospital, they realized that he was not Johnson.
However, facts presented by Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell stated that the defendant was wanted for a series of robberies. On the day in question, ranks received information that he was at East LaPenitence and they went to arrest him.
The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Bobb citing the serious nature of the allegation and the fact that a firearm was used.
Magistrate Bess remanded Bobb to prison until May 11,2020.
