A sailor attached to Toolsie Persaud Limited, today lost his life after he fell overboard while working on a barge.
Dead is 38-year-old Damion Mc Almont of 4/20 Wappin Lane, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The incident occurred at around 02:30 hrs today at Toolsie Persaud Quarry, St Mary Warft, Essequibo River.
According to another sailor, Latchman Ramnarace, he was at the right side of the barge pulling a bow rope when he saw Mc Almont running to the right side of the barge, before falling into the river.
As a result, Ramnarace said he jumped overboard in an effort to rescue his colleague, Mc Almont.
Unfortunately, his efforts were unsuccessful.
At around 06:00 hrs today, Mc Almont’s body was found submerged next to the barge. His body was retrieved and examined; there were no marks of violence.
He was escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
