The main Opposition, People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is currently in celebratory mode as it remains adamant that it has been vindicated by the national recount of all ballots which it says confirms that the party has won the March 02, 2020 General and Regional elections by a huge margin.

According to PPP/C Executive Member and Former Attorney General Anil Nandlall, when the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) concludes tabulating the Statements of Recount (SoRs) today, it will confirm that the PPP/C has not only won the elections freely and fairly, but by a huge margin of some 15, 000 or more votes.

Nandlall made this disclosure yesterday, as he addressed thousands of viewers via a Facebook Live update during which he talked about several matters related to the recount exercise for which the counting of ballots concluded yesterday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.

Expressing total satisfaction with the recount process, Nandlall said, “We [PPP/C] feel very vindicated by this recount exercise and many persons worked tirelessly to make this happen. Not only the leadership of the PPP/C, but our  activists, our comrades who were in that exercise from day one. Our comrades who were guarding the ballot boxes day in and day out, sun or rain. We had people doing security work, we had people cooking food, we had people offering transportation services. All those people we want to take this opportunity to thank from the bottom of our hearts…”

The top ranking PPP/C official continued, “We also have the smaller political parties that stood with us [PPP/C] in unity in our fight for democracy. I want to salute those leaders and activists of those parties as well who worked in the recount process.  I also want to thank the high number of observer teams that were present from the inception. I want to salute the police, most of them, for acting professional and I want to thank the staff of GECOM. Most of them are generally honest and they worked diligently  and competently in those workstations under difficult circumstances and under a lot of pressure.”

Nandlall also expressed gratitude to the high-level CARICOM observer team which has remained in Guyana despite the COVID-19 pandemic. He thanked the press corp which he said has been diligent and provided excellent reportage on the three-month long electoral process.

He also took the opportunity to thank the Guyanese people for remaining patient, calm and responsible during this very tense and difficult elections period.

According to the former Attorney General, “Guyana is the beneficiary of this process because we were able to resist 30 or 40 people who want to steal a government and destroy our country and destroy the future of our country.”

Obviously, referring to the governing APNU+AFC, Nandlall stressed that the coalition had the might of the state apparatus behind it, but was still defeated in the end.

“Guyana survived this ordeal and we always knew the collective good of our people will prevail over the 30 or 40 members of the rigging cabal who want to divide this nation and create ethnic strife and who want to destroy the future of our country simply because they lost an election,” he added.

The Constitution and the Rule of Law say they [APNU+AFC] must give up the government, but they  are not giving up and we will fight them till the end, promised Nandlall who reminded that the electoral process is not yet over until GECOM makes a final declaration.
