The bandit who escaped after a robbery that saw his friend being shot and killed, was yesterday sentenced to three years behind bars for the offense.

Keon Harlequin also known as “Peas”, of One Mile, Wismar, Linden, appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court where he was charged virtually.

The first charge stated that on June 11, 2020, at One Mile, Wismar, Linden, while being in the company of another, and armed with a gun, he robbed Herbert Campbell.

It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession a firearm and ammunition when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.

Harlequin pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to three years behind bars on each. However, the sentences will run concurrently,  so he will only be spending three years.

Last Wednesday, 22-year-old Kevin Batson of 161 First Alley, Wismar lost his life after he was shot by a businessman whom he robbed of a sum of cash, a cellphone, and several other items.

According to a police press release, the now dead man, along with Harlequin went to the businessman’s shop around 14:30hrs.

It was reported that Batson requested to purchase a rake and opted to pay before the item was delivered. It was then that he pulled out a handgun which he used to strike the victim on his head before relieving him of his valuables.

Soon after, Batson and the Harlequin attempted to make good their escape but were chased after by the businessman.

Batson began firing at the businessman who then drew his licensed pistol and returned fire, hitting him. However, they managed to escape.

The police were then called in and upon searching the area, Batson was found in some bushes. At the time, his right hand which appeared to have been bleeding was wrapped with a red bandana.

The police carried out a search on his person and the victim’s cellphone, a sum of cash, and several other items belonging to the victim were found. A further investigation was carried out and Harlequin was later arrested and charged.
