A boat captain who goes by the alias ‘Royo’ of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice is currently being sought by ranks of the Guyana Police Force. This is after he held on to rank and plunged overboard while he was being arrested in relation to a large marijuana bust.
His three accomplices who stayed on the boat are presently in police custody. According to a police release, ranks yesterday intercepted a wooden vessel with 227 pounds of marijuana.
The ranks at the time were conducting a river patrol in the Canje Creek when they intercepted the wooden vessel in the vicinity of Sandaka.
A search of the boat revealed nine taped and compressed parcels, each containing suspected cannabis which when weighed amounted to 103 kilograms. The men were all arrested and were escorted to New Amsterdam along with their boat which was powered by a 60hp outboard engine.
While in the vicinity of New Forest, West Canje, one of the suspects (boat captain) suddenly held on to one of the ranks and plunged overboard with him; the policeman was quickly rescued but the prisoner swam ashore and made good his escape.
The three suspects in custody are from Charlestown and East Ruimveldt, Georgetown respectively. They are being processed for court and stringent efforts are being made to recapture the escapee.
