Imran Daniels, 25, was this morning sentenced to serve fourteen years’ imprisonment for the February 13, 2019 killing of 18-year-old Alex Daniels.
Daniels lost his life during a drunken argument at Frenchman Backdam, Mabura, Region 10 (Upper Demerara – Berbice).
Daniels, who was initially indicted for murder, opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter when he appeared at a sitting of the Demerara assizes.
On the day in question, the two men were imbibing alcohol, along with another man at a shop. All of them were employed at a mining operation in the area. At around 19:30hrs that evening, Imran Daniels and Alex Daniels were involved in a heated argument. During the ordeal, Imran Daniels pulled out a knife and stabbed Alex Daniels.
State Prosecutor Teriq Mohammed disclosed that the stabbing was witnessed by one Thakur Persaud, who said he heard Alex Williams screaming at Imran Daniels in the following words: “Look Ya jook meh! Ya jook meh!”
The prosecutor related that Persaud got out of his hammock and went to rescue Alex Daniels, and discovered a black handled knife lying next to him. According to the prosecutor, after the incident, Imran Daniels attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended. Both he and Alex Daniels were taken to the Mabura Police Outpost.
Following today’s court hearing, which was done via Zoom, Imran Daniels was sentenced to imprisonment. In calculating his sentence, Justice Brassington Reynolds started at a base of 20 years from which he made deductions for an early guilty plea, and mitigating factors.
