Government-nominated Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM): Vincent Alexander, Desmond Trotman and Charles Corbin, have all distanced themselves from the declaration made earlier today; naming Opposition Candidate, Irfaan Ali, the ninth President of Guyana.
The declaration was made by the GECOM Chairperson, Justice (retired) Claudette Singh this afternoon, moments after receiving a report from the Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield that was compiled utilising the figures from the National Recount process.
Commissioner Alexander, who spoke to the media outside GECOM’s Headquarters, said that figures from the recount are corrupt and should have never been used as the basis for the declaration.
Indeed, the incumbent had raised numerous allegations regarding voter impersonation during the vote recount process. The courts have been consistent that these matters should be raised in an elections petition.
“It is unjust for us to take a decision on (declaration) knowing that those figures are corrupted and fraudulent…Notwithstanding the pronouncements made by the courts and everyone else, we are distancing ourselves,” he said.
This declaration will likely bring the five-month electoral impasse in Guyana to an end.
