Three persons last evening lost their lives following a three-vehicle smash up on the Whim Public Road, Corentyne Berbice.
The dead persons have been identified as 21-year-old Jessica Leitch, of Rose Hall Town; Quacy Lewis, a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and of Springlands, Berbice and Reon Moriah, 25, of 8 Circle Street, Corriverton, Berbice.
According to a police release, the fatal accident occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2020, about 23:30h on Whim Public Road, Corentyne Berbice. The vehicles involved are motor lorry # GJJ 5939 driven by a 43 – year- old of Whim Village Corentyne, motor car # PGG 9262 driven by a 19 -year- old of Liverpool Village, Corentyne and motor car # PWW 582 driven by a 21 -year-old police constable of Scothburg, Corriverton.
Inquiries disclosed that motor lorry GJJ 5939 was proceeding west on the southern side of the road whilst motor car PGG 9262 was proceeding in the opposite direction on the northern side of the road.
It was alleged by the driver of the lorry that he was about to park on the said southern parapet when motor car PGG 9262 collided with the right rear wheel of the lorry and shortly after motor car PWW 582 which was proceeding west on the southern side of the road, collided with the rear of the said lorry.
As a result of the impact, the following persons that were occupants in motor car PWW 582 sustained injuries and were taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where the driver was treated for minor injuries and the others were pronounced dead on arrival.
Breathalyzer tests were conducted and the drivers of PGG 9262 and PWW 582 were found to be above the legal limit. The drivers are in custody assisting with the investigation.
