Shawn Harris, called ‘Shawny,’ who was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year for the murder of Sunil Singh, who was knifed to death during a row outside the Blue Martini Nightclub in 2017, has now moved to the Court of Appeal his sentence.
Harris of Lot 131 Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown was sentenced in January 2020 by High Court Judge, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow after a 12-member jury found him guilty of murder.
He was handed a life sentence with the possibility of being eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
In a court document seen by Guyana Standard, Harris contends that his conviction cannot stand, given the evidence adduced during the trial. He further argues that his sentence is excessive in all the circumstances of the case.
Harris, 36, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on February 05, 2017, he murdered Singh, who was stabbed during an altercation between some men at the Blue Martini Night Club on Lamaha, Street, Georgetown. Harris is a father of two and was convicted three times in the past.
