A contractor who fell asleep behind the wheels of a car that collided with a woman, causing her to die, was today charged for the offense.

Forty-four-year-old Feroz Mohamed of 571 Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally – Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrates’ Courts.

Mohamed pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on September 19, 2020, at Zeeburg Public Road, WCD, he drove a motor car in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the death of pedal cyclist Somattie Persaud.

Persaud was a 39-year-old fish vendor of Lot 75 Mandal Street Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara.

Mohamed was represented by Attorney-at-law Bernard Dasilva and was granted $200,000 bail. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on November 5, 2020.

It was reported that the pedal cyclist was riding west on the southern side of the Zeeburg Public Road, while the motor car was proceeding in the same direction at a normal rate of speed.

It was reported that Mohamed fell asleep but awoke when he felt an impact.

As he came out from his vehicle, he observed that he was stationary at a concrete fence on the southern side of the said road, and a female with a pedal cycle was seen lying on the southern grass parapet motionless with injuries about her body.

Mohamed was assisted by a passerby who took her to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced her dead.
