The quick response by the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) averted a conceivably catastrophic situation at the Palms Geriatric Home after a fire erupted early this morning.
Guyana Standard understands that the fire started at about 7:13hrs outside the matron’s office while another fire was at the dormitory building. The GFS was immediately summoned to the location.
The tenders, along with the firemen, responded promptly and managed to extinguish the blaze before it escalated.
Meanwhile, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said that when fire tenders arrived on the scene, there was a pile of paper at the matron’s building. It is suspected that might have caused the fire.
He added that the fire is being treated as arson. Nevertheless, the GFS is continuing its investigation.
