Police are investigating report of an abduction of a one-day old baby which occurred two days ago at Tuschen Squatting Area, East Bank Essequibo.
According to police, the newborn was allegedly abducted by 34-year-old man (no name given) of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, who shared a relationship with the mother of the baby.
Enquiries disclosed that last Tuesday, the 19-year-old mother of the child, Jennifer Goberdan was at her mother’s home at Tuschen Squatting Area, when the man walked into the house and demanded that she hand over the baby, to which she said refused since the baby was just one day old.
As a result of the mother’s refusal, the suspect became annoyed and pulled out a silver handgun from his left side pants pocket and pointed it at her. She then became fearful for her life and released the baby to the suspect, who walked out of the house and made good his escape. The matter was reported to the Tuschen Outpost shortly after.
Based upon the report, ranks in the Division were alerted, and the suspect was caught in a minibus at the Vreed-en-Hoop junction.
He was in the company of a 24-year-old woman of Melanie, East Coast Demerara, who was found holding the baby.
The man and woman were arrested and taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and questioned. The female stated that she does not know the suspect, however she was only asked to hold the baby just before the Police stopped the bus. Her story was confirmed by the suspect.
Statements were taken from her, and she was released while the suspect remains in custody. The baby was also handed over to the mother who visited the station.
Further investigations are ongoing.
