One section of bleachers composed of about seven wooden planks, one zinc fence, and a small concrete washroom facility cost the national purse some $20M under the APNU+AFC administration.
The media became aware of this yesterday during the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson’s outreach in Berbice. During an interview at the ground located in Zambia, East Berbice, Ramson said that while it is unfortunate that the money was misappropriated, the reality should not come as a surprise to anyone as that sort of management was characteristic of the David Granger-led administration.
The Minister said that no one has been able to use the ground despite claims that so much money was spent to enhance the facility.
Ramson committed that this will be a “thing of the past.” He told the media, “One of the reasons you find that there is so much transparency, accountability and ministerial oversight over these projects is because we do not want to ever see these things happen again.”
Ramson stressed that money must be spent in a transparent way and Guyanese must be able to get value for their tax dollars.
