A Wakenaam labourer, who was positively identified by an elderly man as the person who chopped him, was today committed to stand trial in the High Court for attempted murder.
34-year-old Franklin Griffith of San Soucie, Wakenaam, Essequibo Islands, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on February 23, 2020, at San Soucie, with intent to commit murder, he caused grievous bodily harm to Thakur Lokram.
When the matter was called today, Magistrate Esther Sam ruled that having considered the prosecution’s evidence, the court is of the opinion that a good case had been made out against the defendant.
Hence, he was committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
It is the prosecution’s case that on the day in question, Lokram and Griffith were involved in a heated verbal confrontation.
Griffith then pulled out a chopper and allegedly dealt the pensioner several chops about his body inflicting wounds to the man’s head, face, shoulder, and left hand.
Lokram was taken to the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital for emergency treatment, but due to the severity of his wounds, he was referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted in a critical condition.
