The man who was seen in a video having an altercation with a police officer at Stabroek Market on Sunday was charged with robbery with aggravation.
Clive Fields, also known as Anthony Prince, was hauled before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday.
The charge alleged that on January 03, 2021, Fields, in the vicinity of Demico House, Stabroek Square, robbed Venezuelan national Ricky Menque of a Samsung cell phone and $25,000 cash.
Reports are that Menque excited a minibus and was walking on the pavement in the vicinity of Demico House when three males, who were walking in an opposite direction, pounced on him.
Investigations revealed that the men relieved the Venezuelan national and made good their escape.
Later in the day, Fields was arrested based on information received and was positively identified by the victim as one of the individuals who robbed him.
Video footage later showed Fields and the police officer exchanging blows before the civilian was cuffed and kicked into submission.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) subsequently issued a statement claiming that the suspect attacked the policemen “who were forced to defend themselves.”
“This led to a physical confrontation between the suspect and the police, part of which has been circulating on social media,” the force said.
Magistrate McLennan released Fields on $30,000 bail.
