One week after ExxonMobil announced that it would be increasing its flaring levels due to technical issues with a seal for the Liza Destiny’s gas compressor system, the Alliance For Change (AFC) has now come forward to admonish the government for this state of affairs.
In a missive to the media, the Opposition party said it is particularly disturbed that the company is being allowed to produce at peak levels, being 120,000 barrels of oil per day, which would result in more than 15 million cubic feet of gas being burnt simultaneously.
By allowing this state of affairs, the AFC said that the PPP/C, whether through ignorance, incompetence, negligence, or just sheer indifference to the wellbeing of Guyana’s health, safety, and the environment, is allowing the atmosphere to be polluted with over 250 toxic chemicals.
The AFC said while it supports oil and gas development, it must be carried out in a safe manner.
