Kenard Reid, 34 and his wife, Fabiana Cooper ,26, were today hauled before Principal Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where they claimed that the police removed money from their home during the course of home searches.
Reid, who is a block maker was charged with having 137.3 grams of cannabis for trafficking on February 2, 2021 at Bamboo Drive Meadow Brook, Georgetown.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was placed on $60,000 bail.
His wife told the court she is a hairdresser, and was charged with assaulting a Guyana Police rank who was on duty at the same location and on the same date as the charge against her husband.
Cooper denied the charge and was released on $10,000 bail.
According to the couple’s attorney, Lawrence Harris, told the court that the drugs were found in a nearby trench and fished out by ranks. He maintained that his client is innocent and the illicit substance was not found on Reid or his home.
He further said that the ranks searched the man’s home three times within a two months period. On the first occasion, they searched the man’s room and according to Reid, some $200,000 was missing.
Following the second search, some $500,000, property of his father and $600,000, property of his mother, along with jewellery, was removed, according to the man’s claims.
The last search which was on the day in question, the police allegedly searched the room and a nearby trench which is where the drugs were found.
According to Harris, CCTV footage taken from Reid’s home can back the claim that the drugs were not found at the man’s home.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that the man threw the cannabis into the trench while the ranks were searching the home. The Prosecutor however, did not object to the couple being released on bail.
Both are expected to return to court on March 15.
