The Full Court today quashed an application that was made by Anand Sanasie, President of the West Demerara Cricket Association, to prevent the holding of a free and fair election of Executive Members for the Demerara Cricket Board. As a result of this, the election will be allowed to go ahead on Friday under the supervision of the court. The order for the election to be held in two days was handed down recently by Justice Navindra Singh.
Informing Guyana Standard moments ago of this latest development was Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Arudranauth Goosai, who represented Roger Harper, President of the Georgetown Cricket Association; Davteerth Anandjit, Secretary of the East Coast Cricket Board; and Bradley Fredericks, President of the Upper Demerara Cricket Association. The said applicants fought tirelessly against Sanasi since 2018 for the holding of a transparent electoral process.
Speaking to the history of this matter during a previous interview, Gossai had recalled that in 2017, an action was filed in Berbice for the county’s board to have an election. Gossai said he had succeeded in Berbice where the court supervised the election while adding that the process was a smooth one.
In the following year, Gossai said that similar action was filed for the Demerara Board in hope that a similar success would be replicated. The lawyer was keen to note that the action was seen by his clients as a necessary one since Demerara had not seen what was deemed to be a free and fair election since 2011.
Guyana Standard was told that Sanasi tried several legal maneuverings, one of which even led to the suspension of the Cricket Act. After that suspension was lifted by the courts, Gossai had filed an application before Justice Navindra Singh to fix a date for the election of the Demerara Executive Board to be held. That ruling which was handed down on Monday states that the election should be held on Friday at the Demerara Cricket Club. In light of the unanimous decision by the Full Court to disallow Sanasi’s application to further stymie the process, the election will now go ahead unhindered.
