Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred this morning around 10:55hrs at the junction of Houston Public Road and Nelson Mandela Avenue.
The accident involved: motor lorry, #GYY1980, driven by a 36-year-old man of Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara (EBD); motor lorry, #GRR9016, driven by a 33-year-old of Phase 3, Providence, EBD; and a pedestrian, who has been identified as 60-year-old, Gansham Cooblall of Curtis Street, Albouystown.
Enquiries disclosed that the left side front of motor lorry, #GYY1980, came into contact with the pedestrian.
As a result of the collision the Cooblall reportedly fell onto the road surface where the left-side front wheel subsequently ran over him. An alarm was raised, and the driver of the lorry, in the process of reversing the vehicle, slammed into the front-centre of motor lorry, #GRR9016.
The pedestrian was later picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor, who later pronounced him dead.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, which revealed no trace of alcohol in his system. The driver is in custody assisting the investigation.
