Clarence Wrights, 64, of Bagotsville, who CANU officers say had over 9lbs of cannabis in his possession was brought before Cheif Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He was charged with trafficking narcotics.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which states that on March 31, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, he had 4.52 grams of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.
He was remanded until April 25.
Guyana Standard understands that on Wednesday, as Wrights was entering the city from the West Bank of Demerara by way of the Stabroek Market Stelling in Georgetown, CANU officers observed him pulling a suitcase.
He was interdicted and upon searching the suitcase, nine parcels of compressed cannabis were found. CANU officers said it weighed 4.508 kilograms (9.9lbs).
The officers also found two small ziploc parcels of marijuana, amounting to 12 grammes in his pants pocket. An undisclosed quantity of cash was also found in his possession.
The marijuana is said to have a street value of US$40,000.
