A 72-year-old, West Coast Demerara (WCD) man was killed around 12:30hrs today after he was struck down by a minibus at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.

Police say that the now-deceased, Keith Alexander, of Church Street, Uivtlugt was struck down by minibus #BWW 7191, which was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway.

The 30-year-old driver from Kitty, Georgetown, told police that as he was in the vicinity of Demerara Fire Insurance Company, Alexander “suddenly attempted” to cross the road from west to east into the path of the bus.

He said he applied brakes to avoid a collision, but the right-side front of the vehicle collided with the pedestrian. As a result, Alexander fell onto the roadway and received injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Alexander was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by doctors on duty. He subsequently died without regaining consciousness whilst receiving treatment.

The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem Examination.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the said driver and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He, however, remains in custody as investigations continue.
