Opposition Leader, Joseph Harmon has taken umbrage at the ‘promotion’ markings being placed on the aid sent to volcano-affected St Vincent and Grenadines.
He said that while the Opposition supports the national effort to send aid, it condemns the “promotion” of Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali on the markings affixed on the items, as well as the “individual promotion” of companies that are part of the response.
“We support this effort and call for continued support from our people…It is a humanitarian effort and persons should not seek to capitalize on the misfortunes of our Vincentian brothers and sisters,” he said during a press conference today.
Harmon added that the Opposition stands ready to offer technical assistance to the Civil Defense Commission in coordinating aid for the relief and benefit of Vincentians. He also reiterated the call for the Government of Guyana to put suitable measures in place to accommodate Vincentians in Guyana, who need to be evacuated and relocated should the need arise.
Guyana has already donated some 350 tons of emergency relief following last week’s eruption of the La Soufrière volcano, blanketing the island in a layer of ash and forcing more than 16,000 people to evacuate their homes.
