With only a few days remaining before the present Commissioner of Police, Leslie James officially retires, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has shyed away from saying if the acting Top Cop, Nigel Hoppie will be confirmed to that position.
At a press conference earlier today, Dr. Ali was asked if Hoppie will receive his blessing to be the new official Top Cop. The President was strategic in not answering with a simple yes or no. He said that Hoppie continues to act as Commissioner of Police and that is as much as he will say on that matter for now.
In any case, even if the President already has his pick for Top Cop, that appointment is highly unlikely to be made any time soon. The process for the appointment of a Commissioner of Police constitutionally necessitates the input of the Leader of the Opposition.
The President was adamant that given the posture of Opposition Leader, Joseph Harmon, there will be no engagements on any front. Dr. Ali called Harmon duplicitous and basically described him as a strife maker who lacks respect for the Executive and the Judiciary.
