Chief Magistrate Ann McKenna, today committed Kester Lewis to stand trial at the High Court for killing a Triumph man.
Lewis, a mechanic, was on trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for a murder charge. He was not required to plead to the charge since it was laid indictably.
The charge for which Lewis was granted $300,000 bail alleges that on December 29, 2020, at D’Urban Street, Lodge, he unlawfully killed 29-year-old David Barclay.
Guyana Standard had reported that Barclay approached Lewis in a bid to have a tyre on his vehicle repaired. While in the process of making payment, an argument ensued between the two over the price.
It was then alleged that during the row, Lewis took a knife and slashed a tyre of Barclay. He reportedly told investigators that he then jumped into his vehicle, and while in the process of driving off, the 29-year-old man jumped onto the right side front door and held on to him.
Lewis reportedly said that he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into several parked cars. The police said that Barclay, who was left lying motionless on the roadway, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post mortem examination revealed that Barclay died as a result of multiple injuries.
