Some 34,317 persons have received their second dose of COVID-19 vaccines, says Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony. This translates to seven percent of the adult population being fully immunised against a severe form of the disease. He also reported that 169,981 or 34.9% of the adult population have received their first dose.
The health official, during today’s update, said that the response has been good with over 7,000 immunisations done yesterday alone. He is encouraging persons to come forward and take the jab, while calling on those who received their first dose to return for their second.
The government yesterday received close to 68,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V. This forms part of 800,000 dose allotment. The Minister expressed optimism that with these doses, Guyana can achieve herd immunity.
“We’re acquiring 800,000 doses of Sputnik V. Already, we have sorted out 200,000 and we have put arrangements in place for the other 600,000. So, with 800,000 doses, we’ll be able to immunise 400,000 persons, because as you know, this is a two-dose vaccine. That’s whatwe’re working on. Not all of the vaccines will come in at the same time; they will come in tranches and as fast as we get them we’ll be distributing them and making sure that people can have access to these vaccines,” he said.
